Springing Forward

I’ve been in a bit of a seasonal slump with all this snow, snow, more freaking snow! But an unusual thing happened last weekend when the time sprang forward. Usually this really knocks the wind out of my sails and I really feel the loss of that extra hour of sleep for weeks after, but not this time. Instead, this year it seemed to jolt me out of my seasonal slump and energize me.

I’ve been walking on the treadmill, eating salads, cooking meals, getting organized, planning trips, getting work done, feeling excited about Spring and life in general, and even baking! I rarely bake. I always see recipes I want to try, but I never actually try to make them. Until yesterday.

Yesterday was a big time snow day and all I could think of was the comfort of something sweet, something delicious, some home-made special treat, with a piping hot cup of tea. So I visited one of my favourite blogs and looked up a recipe I’d noticed awhile ago but never actually got around to making.

I dug out my brand new, never out of the box food processor (which I LOVE, by the way!) and got to work in the kitchen.

The result is yummy!

The photo doesn’t do them justice at all. They are really good. I did substitute some things from the original recipe. I used Splenda brown sugar blend instead of regular brown sugar, and I accidentally used triple the amount of baking soda (oops!) but they turned out anyway. I used these mini-chocolate chips instead of regular sized ones. I got them one time when they were on sale, I think I might prefer the full-size chocolate chip in future.

Well.ca is becoming my most favourite place to shop these days, by the way. I love that I can use my debit card to pay, instead of my credit card. I find all kinds of healthy, natural, non-GMO, vegan products there that I might never have found out about otherwise, or that you can’t even buy around here. I hate shopping in general, but I’m totally addicted to this kind of shopping. (Pssst, don’t tell anyone but if you buy something there and use the coupon code KellieBlog you can save $10 on your first order of $40 or more.)

Speaking of online shopping, I recently got the Spark Activity Tracker from Amazon. I’ve been a member of the SparkPeople website for about seven years now, popping in from time to time for help to change to a healthier lifestyle. Last autumn I went back to it when I decided I want to go vegetarian because I knew I’d need education and support. I’ve always done pretty well when it comes to changing my eating habits, but exercise (or movement of any kind in general) has never been my strong suit, so when they came out with this neat little gadget I knew I wanted one because it might be just the thing to get me off my butt and moving again.

I priced it before Christmas when it was only available on their website or the American Amazon, and with the exchange rate, duty, etc. I was looking at well over a hundred bucks for something that I didn’t even know if I’d like or use. So, I waited and ordered it as soon as it came available in Canada. Much cheaper! Yay! So far, I really like it. I’m definitely moving more than I was, which is always a good thing. It seems pretty accurate and I love that it automatically uploads all my activity information to the SparkPeople site. It’s really helpful. Two thumbs up from me! So, if you’re ever looking for some healthy education and motivation, the SparkPeople site is totally free to use and the Spark Activity Tracker is an excellent investment.

I think I’ll go for a walk now, so I can have a blondie later!
