Back in Action

tshirtI am many weeks over due for an update. I was very sick for a bit, thought I was well again but relapsed. All together I was severely ill for 6-8 weeks. MUCH too long! But I have been recovered for one full week and a day now. The thing about being sick for so long is that you fall behind on things. Not just your 9-5 pay cheque work, but also the cleaning and other chores that normally keep your household running smoothly, books you’re reading, television series you’re watching, exercise you planned to get, diets you should have been following, and everything else that you can’t do while you lay in bed dozing in and out of sleep.

Celebrity Guest Appearance of the Day

psfaslaskeyI woke just after 5 this morning but I didn’t feel like getting up. I am congested again, hacking cough. I think I need more drugs. I’ve also been dealing with a lot of swelling in my legs and ankles these past couple of days. Yesterday I used my egg timer to remind me to take regular breaks from my desk. I think I will buy some compression socks to improve my circulation.

So anyway, I woke early but refused to get up so I went back to bed and wrote, starred, directed, and watched one of my weird lucid dreams. It was a church dream … maybe because I watched a funeral on Once Upon a Time last night, maybe because I was in a church a few weekends ago being in a wedding, I dunno, but the reverend was very much in my subconscious and making his opinions known … with one minor detail omitted … the role of my minister was played by none other than the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman! Dawn Comes Early

dawn05102016aI am literally up at the crack of dawn this morning, despite not getting to bed until nearly 1 am. I must truly be feeling better. This morning my mom and four of my aunts, her sisters, are heading west to visit my other aunt, their other sister, in Calgary for a week. I am excited for her, excited that she is venturing out to places she has always wanted to go. I hope they have an amazing trip. I’m sure they will have a lot of laughs. Oh to be a fly on that carry-on bag!  Continue reading “Dawn Comes Early”

Blown Away

antiquetypewriterOn the weekend my eldest nieces sent me their writing samples for the upcoming Blue Pencil Cafe at the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick’s WordSpring festival. One did poetry and the other a short story. I was blown away by both of them. Continue reading “Blown Away”

Yes, I may have lingered in bed until 10:30 this morning but then I got up and threw in a load of laundry. Today I feel better. Today I will do all the things I wanted to do all week but was too weak and sick to accomplish. Today I will go outside and go shopping for food and stuff. Today I will clean up this damn pig sty. Today I will cook a decent meal.

Coming Home

fortmacappreciationMy boyfriend is at some little airstrip waiting with about 200 other people to catch a plane to Edmonton. Late last night after I was asleep, they got word the job was shut down and it would be a couple of weeks before it started again. They could have stayed, but they weren’t being paid. They had to find their own way out of camp and to the little airstrip. The flight to Edmonton is free. Once he gets there he will have to see about getting a flight out to home. Hopefully he won’t have to wait long.

He is tired and cranky and hungry because they couldn’t get much to eat at the camp yesterday on account of having so many people there. He couldn’t get any snacks. All the vending machines were empty. They had to close the little snack kitchen, in order to ration food. But he has such compassion for the people of Fort McMurray, who are devastated by this fire, that he isn’t complaining. He is thankful that he has a home and his family is safe in New Brunswick. He says it’s like a war zone out there. And he told me he heard Fort Mac burned to the ground last night, the hospital and airport and other important buildings gone into the ashes. I don’t know if this is true. I haven’t got a television and I haven’t really been reading much news online because unfortunately I’m still sick.

Prayers Needed

fortmacMy boyfriend’s shift was cancelled last night on account of the wildfires in Alberta. He is in a camp about an hour from Fort Mac. Last night they could see the smoke in the sky. It has been really hot there this past week. The entire city of Fort Mac was ordered to evacuate yesterday … 70,000 people I heard, 80,000 someone else said … the largest mandatory evacuation in Alberta’s history. Homes have been lost, vehicles, a whole trailer park filled with RVs, but no lives that I’ve heard about. I pray lives will be safe. Material things don’t matter much. It is a devastating thing to lose all your possessions, your home, but you can recover, rebuild.

An awful lot of people affected by this are from the East Coast. Many are from the Miramichi and all over New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Many have already lost their homes in one sense, being forced to relocate in order to be able to make a decent wage and life for themselves. They are a tough breed, used to dealing with tough times. They will get through this too, just like they always do.  Continue reading “Prayers Needed”
